May 2022 Project Update

By Jamie Cross | Emergency Programs Manager

As so often occurs, when new emergencies emerge in the world there is a tendancy to forget about the ongoing humanitarian crises still plaguing many countries. More than seven years of conflict in Yemen has caused total disruption of the country, displacing more than 4 million people and leaving 23.4 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. Yemen remains one of the world's largest humanitarian crises and aid operations remain critical to ensuring affected families are supported.

GlobalMedic is continuing our response in Yemen providing access to clean drinking water, food assistance and personal protective equipment (PPE). Over the last few months we have distributed additional Family Emergency Kits and Emergency Food Kits to internally displaced persons (IDPs), as well as providing PPE to medical centres to protect healthcare workers.

Family Emergency Kits consist primarily of a water purification solution. This can come in the form of a ceramic filter or purification powder sachets. These tools help ensure vulnerable familes have consistent access to clean drinking water, a resource that is so often disrupted when there is ongoing active conflict. Clean drinking water in the home means that families can avoid contracting water-bourne illnesses like cholera which Yemen has consistently seen massive waves of since 2017. In addition to providing a water purification solution, FEKs include other items like soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and solar lights.

Emergency Food Kits are developed to be specific to the communities in which they will be distributed. Items are picked which are familiar and that people will be happy to receive and eat. The Emergency Food Kits we distribute in Yemen consist of items like lentils, rice and chickpeas, all nutritious staples of the area. More than 17.4 million people in Yemen are acutely food insecure so it is important to continue food security programming to meet these needs.

Whether it is in the news cycle or not, GlobalMedic will continue to respond to the needs in Yemen. All donations to this project will go towards providing Family Emergency Kits and Emergency Food Kits to vulnerable families in Yemen.
