 Seventh Report for GlobalGiving

Project Title: Climate Change Resilient Families in Honduras

In this quarter there has been a decrease in rainfall, especially in the southern part of the country, favoring the harvest of basic grains such as corn and beans. In the west there have been higher levels of rainfall and losses have been recorded in coffee harvests. During the month of January 2024, there is an absence of rainfall and government authorities have predicted the continuation of the El Niño phenomenon, which means that it will be a year with drought in most of the country.

In Red COMAL we have continued the training processes aimed at basic grains and vegetable farmers, in this period we have concentrated training efforts in the indigenous communities of Intibucá and La Paz, this with the aim of reducing the impact of climate change.

Main achievements:

During this seventh quarter, technical assistance has been provided to farmers in the indigenous communities of the northern zone of Intibucá and in the municipalities of the highlands in the Department of La Paz, so that they can implement agroecological practices through the development and use of agroecological inputs using local materials.

At least 50 families have been trained in the use of sulfocalcium to control pests and fungal diseases in their vegetable and basic grain crops. Pruning practices have also been carried out on avocado and other fruit tree crops.

In addition, in order to make better use of agroecological fertilizers, soil analyses have been carried out to determine the acidity or alkalinity of the soil, i.e. the Ph. Thirty farmers from various rural communities in Intibucá and La Paz have been trained in this process.

The farmers are very grateful for this valuable support, which is possible thanks to the financial support of all the donors in GlobalGiving. We take this opportunity to wish them a happy year 2024.
