Summary

Women in Rural India earn their income from tending to their farmlands or taking care of their farm animals. Over the past 5 years, we have been facing droughts, unseasonal rainfall and increasing temperatures. Ashwini is a women farmer who spent more than INR 25,000 on her farm land but she is afraid of being able to make even INR 5000 back after selling her produce. There is a dire need to train women on scientific ways of farming to build climate resilience and ensure they earn higher incomes

Challenge

In India, 80% of agricultural workers are women. There are currently more than 200,000 women farmers living in Mann & Khatav districts that do not have access to agricultural scientific knowledge. Over the past 5 years, there has been a decrease in yields due to adverse climatic conditions (droughts, unseasonal rainfalls and increasing temp) that have destroyed the soil. Farmers spend more and more money but are unable to recover their costs and land up in a vicious cycle of poverty and debts.

Solution

Women farmers will be provided with training and understanding of the importance of testing their soil and water. They will be educated on what are the components of soil and how to maintain soil quality for farming. They will be trained on how to adopt simple practices that can safeguard their crops from extreme climatic conditions. This will ensure that women are educated in the scientific aspects of farming, build climate resilience and earn higher incomes.

Long-Term Impact

This project will ensure that 50,000 women farmers to increase incomes through adoption of sustainable farming practises. Over 3 years, we aim to ensure that these 50,000 women farmers build resilience to the extent that they are able to adapt with adverse climatic conditions.
