Since 2007, we have been working on organizing coastal cleanup activities, aiming to reduce the litter amount in the ocean environment and to educate the public about marine protection in China. By the end of 2020, 2,179 coastal cleanup events with over 95,000 volunteers have been carried out in China, cleaning up over 450 tons of litter. In 2021, we plan to carry out at least 900 coastal cleanup activities, mobilizing over 22,000 volunteers to clean up more than 80 tons of coastal litter.
Marine debris entangles animals, causes ingestion, clogs plants, animals and habitats, and helps species invasion. It has a negative impact on fisheries, shipping and coastal tourism, costing the world $13 billion a year alone in lost economic activities such as ship repair, shore cleaning and reduced tourism revenue. It also accumulate POPs and other pollutants through the food chain and thus endanger human health. However, people's awareness or action is not enough.
There are three ways to reduce marine litter: the end-of-pipe treatment (remove the coastal litter), no litter and not to produce litter. Coastal cleanup not only directly reduces marine debris, but more importantly, it educates every volunteer who takes part in cleanup about the importance of no littering and reducing less litter.
The project will contribute to reduction of marine litter, lead to a more eco-friendly lifestyle, return a clean ocean, and keep the balance of marine ecosystem.
