Combating Hunger in Syria

With the initiation of voluntary return processes to Syria, Association for Social Development and Aid Mobilization(ASAM) continues to provide support to families returning through the border gates. As part of these efforts, food kits were distributed to help families meet their immediate basic needs during this challenging transition.

Ayse, one of the beneficiaries who received a food kit, expressed her gratitude with these words:
“We have come from a long journey, and being able to prepare a meal for my children right away gave me peace of mind. It is very meaningful that we are not forgotten.”

ASAM remains committed to continuing its humanitarian assistance throughout the return process. Ensuring that families—particularly those with children—have access to essential needs such as food and other basic supplies continues to be among the organization’s top priorities.

Ahmed fled the Syrian civil war in 2017. His family, living in Aleppo, lived under the constant threat of violence. When a bombing near their home made it impossible for them to stay, they made the difficult decision to leave Syria in search of safety and come to Türkiye.

Ahmed, who said that his mind has remained in his homeland since he came to Türkiye, is now preparing perhaps his most important journey as Syria enters a new phase.

Ahmed stated, "I didn't know the language when I came to Türkiye, and my children couldn't attend school. Initially, it was quite difficult. I needed to find a job, and with the support of Syrians living here, I started working in construction."

Ahmed said, "The changes in Syria have excited us greatly, but deciding to return is not easy." He emphasized, "In 2017, I knew our house was there. But now, I don't know if it's still standing." Ahmed plans to visit his home through permitted entries and exits to see if it's still intact. If the conditions there are suitable, he will return to bring his family.

Syrian refugees, like Ahmed, are considering returning to their homeland. Many of the Syrians residing in Türkiye are preparing to close their small businesses and return to Syria. However, uncertainties about what they will encounter upon their return continue to cause concern.

Ahmed received counselling from Association for Social Development and Aid Mobilization (ASAM) regarding his decision to return and the necessary documentation to obtain from Türkiye. He hopes that governments and international organizations will continue to support returnees, particularly by providing assistance in obtaining documents and financial aid for reconstruction. "I hope Türkiye will facilitate the process for those wishing to return, such as providing school records for children and financial support to rebuild our lives," he says.

Despite all the uncertainties, Ahmed remains hopeful. He eagerly anticipates reuniting with his relatives and introducing his youngest child to Syria for the first time.

Ahmed feels deep gratitude for the kindness and generosity of the Turkish people, who opened their hearts and homes to him and his family when they had nowhere else to go. "We thank Türkiye and the Turkish people; we are forever grateful," he says.
