Summary

Michaelhouse Community Partnerships supports five local schools with a total of nine Eduhelpers. Eduhelpers are passionate, qualified or qualifying teachers whose role is to teach, tutor, coach a sport or assist with any development programmes which support the school and the rest of their community. Our Eduhelper project presents an incredible opportunity to learn and grow as a teacher through on-the-job training while making a difference in the lives of hundreds of enthusiastic young learners.

Challenge

Eduhelpers are based in communities characterized by high levels of unemployment, poverty and illiteracy. The greatest challenge that we face in these schools is ensuring that they all have a sufficient number of qualified, skilled and motivated teachers. We have seen an increase in the number of enrolled learners and this number has to be matched with a growing amount of teachers but unfortunately, this is not always the case. Overcrowded classrooms affect both learners and teachers.

Solution

We will hire more well trained and motivated Eduhelpers to fill the gap in the education system and to reduce the unemployment rate in these communities. With more Eduhelpers in our community schools, the teacher to learner ratio will be vastly improved, and class sizes will be reduced. Furthermore, we believe that the employment of Eduhelpers who have the essential curriculum knowledge will result in more individual attention, increased participation and better communication.

Long-Term Impact

Teachers of all walks of life and subjects have the ability to influence opinions and help form ideas about society, life and personal goals. At the heart of the Eduhelper project is the commitment to consistently produce teachers who are dedicated to providing good quality education to learners to give them a chance for a better future. Through this project, we hope to provide children with positive role models who will teach them the power of persevering with positivity and purpose.
