This project addresses the urgent needs of over 1,000 LGBTIQ youth in western Uganda, who face extreme discrimination due to laws criminalizing sexual minority identities. Many are at risk of arrest, eviction, violence, and social exclusion. The project focuses on building community resilience, providing safe spaces, mental health support, and skills development.
Activities Implemented:
Established safe spaces where youth can access psychosocial support and guidance.
Conducted mental health and wellbeing sessions to help manage stress, fear, and trauma.
Delivered skills training programs, including cake baking and other income-generating activities, to enhance economic independence.
Engaged community leaders and stakeholders in advocacy to reduce discrimination and promote inclusion.
Challenges:
Ongoing threats from enforcement of discriminatory laws continue to put youth at risk.
Limited funding restricts the ability to expand safe spaces and provide continuous support.
Access to resources for skills training and psychosocial services remains inadequate, especially in rural areas.
Impact:
Youth report improved confidence and a sense of safety in safe spaces.
Skills training has provided opportunities for income generation and independence.
Advocacy efforts have increased awareness about the rights and needs of LGBTIQ youth in local communities.
Call for Support:
Additional funding is urgently needed to scale up activities, provide more mental health support, expand skills training, and ensure that no youth is left unsupported. Your support can directly protect and empower these young people, helping them survive, thrive, and contribute positively to their communities.
