The displaced people are still in the different camps in Shire town. Last week a start was made in the return of the displaced people from one area of the Western Zone, but the camp we are working in is not going yet.
We were confronted with the problem that so many aid agencies have reduced their activities or even left. This has left huge gaps in service delivery and we noticed that especially the old people in our site were suffering. The food was not enough and medicines often need to be paid for. A lot of the elderly are in a weak state, many suffer from chronic illness.
It is hard to see the elderly suffer. Their whole life they have worked hard to provide for their family and here they are at the end of thier life living in a room with around 20 other people. Sleeping on the floor and contracting additional diseases. They can't provide for the few dependents they still have and they just feel sad. On top of this the rainy season has started, making everything damp and cold, increasing the number of people who have pneumonia.
We have helped 100 elderly and vulnerable women with much needed cash support so they can at least buy some extra food and pay for their medical expenses. In the meantime we keep hoping that the peace will hold and that these people will be able to go back home fairly soon.
