Building computer skills for girls in Pakistan

By Azeem Christopher | Project Leader

AWARD Pakistan’s Digital Literacy Program for Girls continues to expand its impact across rural Faisalabad, reaching 157 students enrolled in three IT Centres. This steady growth reflects increasing community trust and the rising demand for digital skills among marginalized and school dropout girls.

During this reporting period, structured assessments were conducted to evaluate students’ progress through written, oral, and practical examinations. Results showed strong improvement in both confidence and technical skills, with students demonstrating the ability to independently operate computers and perform basic digital tasks.

Following successful evaluations, ongoing classes have transitioned smoothly into the next phase of learning. A new batch of students has also been enrolled, beginning with foundational modules such as basic computer operations, typing skills, and introduction to software and digital tools. These early lessons focus on building confidence and familiarity for first-time learners.

Meanwhile, continuing students are advancing toward more practical applications, with training in MS Word already underway and upcoming modules including Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, internet usage, and email communication.

Impact Highlight

Within a short span of time, girls who had no prior exposure to computers are now confidently operating systems, creating documents in MS Word, and performing essential digital tasks independently. The structured training approach, combined with regular assessments and practical exercises, has significantly enhanced their confidence and skills, highlighting the program’s strong impact in bridging the digital divide for rural girls.

Way Forward

As the program progresses, students will continue strengthening their MS Word skills before advancing to Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, internet browsing, and email communication. In the later stages, they will also be introduced to software installation, social media management, and basic AI concepts, preparing them for future educational, employment, and entrepreneurial opportunities in an increasingly digital world.
