YETS (Youth Empowerment Through Sports) Ghana plans to construct a Youth Development Centre in Anwiankwanta village to provide free after school activities (sports practices, study/homework tutoring, life skills workshops and mentorship) throughout the week for all children in a location that is accessible and visible for the entire community regardless of any impairments.
The issue at our current centre now is the policy that is based on spiritual motives rather than rational thinking. The centre is also at a walking distance of 20 minutes from the community. However, it is a busy and dangerous road that makes this trip challenging. More than 70% of the participants resides in this village. Therefore an own facility will would increase the accessibility and make YETS independent and also lead to a risk reduction in case of a sudden closure of the orphanage.
We provide youth at risk of being cut off from society with the opportunity to participate in a sports program that can strengthen their social skills and improve their self-esteem so they will be able to independently function in the community and make a positive contribution to it. The program is based on three pillars: sport, education and social Integration. Participants are supported in various ways in their education, and develop both soft skills and practical initiatives.
The YETS Ghana project provide participants with the tools needed to succeed in society and make a positive contribution to their community. As part of this we connect participants who previously couldn't even dream of going to proper/big schools in the country, are now getting athletic scholarships to study in a high level of quality education. This has been a great opportunity to develop their self-esteem to become an asset to the society and give back to their community
