Gift of the Givers is a partner to the South African government's Covid-19 initiative, augmenting public health services by supporting medical professionals with protective wear, supplying relevant essential medical equipment and providing medical consumables to the institutions in urgent need. Water, food and other basic essentials are also being provided to the most vulnerable.
The COVID-19 pandemic is unlike any other disaster that we have encountered before. There are a number of challenges. However, the challenge we face as a country is when the disease enters communities where there are large numbers of immunocompromised individuals with pre-existing conditions of TB, HIV, AIDS, cancer, malnutrition, diabetes, etc. Infection in this instance could pose a serious threat to the patient and our overburdened health facilities.
Several areas have been identified as being practical areas where Gift of the Givers can add value. These are: 1. Reduce Risk of Spread and Burden on State Hospitals and Resources (Provision of Medical Supplies, Availability of Medical Equipment, Pre-triage, Reduce the cost of Screening for Private Patients) 2. Access to Water (bottled water, boreholes & water tankers) 3. Access to Basic Supplies and Provision of Food 4. Education and Awareness
