The COVID-19 Pandemic -
2021 witnessed the continuance of the global COVID-19 pandemic, with South Africa feeling the effects, especially, with regard to the third wave. The year started in the midst of the 2nd wave.
CPAP Machines and PPE: With the country in the grip of the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gift of the Givers continued providing medical support within the country, including the provision of 2 710 CPAP machines which were distributed to 117 public and private facilities.
In addition, the organisation was directly involved in the widespread distribution of crucially-needed PPE to hospitals for the benefit and protection of this country's vital front-line healthcare workers.
Lenasia 24-hour Care Centre: In the middle of the year under review (could we perhaps reduce the number of times we refer to 2021 as “the year under review”), COVID-19 infections in Lenasia, Gauteng, showed a rapid increase, coupled with an alarming escalation in the death rate.
This prompted the organisation's urgent and timely establishment of a 24-hour care centre, equipped with cutting-edge technology and the provision of around-the-clock support and assistance. A number of healthcare specialists were introduced in order to effectively operate the facility, ensuring that patients received the best possible treatment, a move which proved tremendously successful in handling the surge of cases.
Bhisho Hospital: The Eastern Cape was particularly hard-hit by the spread of the virus. This resulted in soaring infection levels which overwhelmed the region's under-resourced medical facilities and left them battling to cope with patient hospitalisation needs.
Gift of the Givers moved to create a R3 million, dedicated 100-bed facility at Bhisho Hospital, thus affording COVID-19 patients the comprehensive care they required.
The organisation's always-ready team of medical professionals moved into the facility and worked tirelessly to combat the flood of incoming infected patients. The intervention was hugely successful, with countless treated patients returning to good health and being released from the new facility.
