Job aspirations and practically matching personal interests and potential with career opportunities are big hurdles for children living in the child care institution. They tend to know little about their own personal interests and capabilities and lack clarity about what they want to be and do in the future. In many cases, they tend towards unrealistic expectations and goals. Due to various reasons, there has been disruption in the academic and personality development. Therefore one of the aims in the education is the development of personalities of the children in order to bring out the best in them, so that they can shine in whichever area they choose to work and become better citizens, in particular during their transition from institutional life to self-dependent life.

So looking to the need of the hour, El Shaddai conducts soft skills training and Personality development Class every Wednesday for the young youths living in the child care institutions. Around 30 young youths are attending the class.

The sessions are taken by Matthew, The co-founder and the managing Trustee of El Shaddai with an objective to familiarize youths with the emerging ideas and trends on how to develop personality and its importance in the current days. He taught the children to work with various professionals, people and groups to understand the meaning of life and work in the present context; to enhance their communication skills and interpersonal skills in order to function in professional and social settings effectively; to enrich the academic language skills for academic writing and presentations; to understand effective planning, time management and implementation for setting goals and achieving both personal and professional goals; to learn to evaluate oneself for further growth, personally and professionally, how to lead through crisis, taking up responsibilities without giving excuses. Apart from Personality development, we are also providing soft skill training to the children which will be useful in both personal as well as professional life.

Safeguarding children from the impact of covid-19

Safeguarding the home children from the repercussion of coronavirus Due to the growing cases of corona virus around the world and in India, life has become very difficult for these groups of children. Regular school life, engaging in extra curricular activities, sports and socializing had become a thing of the past. However due to innovative thinking of our management and staff were able to bring back the child’s life experience in the confined of the home. We have 150 children in our care staying in 3 homes at the moment. During this time of crises, a sudden life change becomes very difficult to adapt to, especially for children, hence, we developed a schedule for the children to follow, regularly enhancing their knowledge.

The children are taught about personal hygiene, cleanliness, social distancing, washing hands regularly and wearing face masks. For the safety of the children and the staff we ensured that all the homes were sanitized regularly.

In order to help the children get rid of their stage fear and boost their level of confidence, from time to time we held events and competitions on storytelling, G.K quiz, dance and Zumba where all the children got equal opportunity to showcase their talents and develop the ability to articulate their thoughts into words. A session was held for boys and girls on ‘How to be a Good Writer’. The children were amazed at the significance of using the right words when writing their thoughts on paper. Children also attended a workshop on career guidance which helped them to plan for the future.

Keeping in mind the importance of overall development of the children, the children were given an opportunity to choose any activity of their choice and interest such as gardening, farming, tailoring, cooking, graphic designing, and many more where they learnt many things and polished their skills. Besides this, the children also took part in many outdoor games such as football, badminton and basketball and indoor games such as chess and carom. Every second week of every month, birthdays of the children were celebrated where the child was gifted a present, a cake was cut, with the staff and children singing and praying for the child.

Beginning from the month of June, with all the precautions we have started distance learning from home with new experience for them as well the teachers. The children are taught online through recorded videos and live sessions. Home in-charges are making all the efforts to ensure that the children understand every concept clearly. The respective class teachers take turn to visit the homes regularly to address the queries and difficulty and see that the children are understanding what has been taught and a regular checkup of their academic progress is being done.
