This project will provide support and information to 600 street children and their families during the Covid-19 pandemic in Mumbai. Forced to survive in the streets, the pandemic and the lockdown have put them in a very vulnerable position. Making use of a mobile unit, called the "Smiling Bus", we will provide them with support, resources and information to help them dealing with this terrible situation.
Since the first quarter of the year, the population of Mumbai has been confined due to the Covid-19. This measure represented a serious problem for our constituents, used to sporadic and informal economic activities to cover only their daily needs, to whom the economic breakdown prevented from accessing to basic resources. Although the lockdown has been gradually raised, people is still in need of resources and support to overcome the difficult situation they are facing.
Sonrisas de Bombay will provide street children and their families, as well as other constituents, with information and support about the resources they will need to face the current situation. A mobile unit (the "Smiling bus") will allow us to reach several points of the city and offer them information and resources about Covid-19. We will distribute masks, and give legal support to obtain the Ration Cards issued by authorities, so they can get food packages distributed by local government.
Sonrisas de Bombay is implementing long term development projects with street children, as well as human trafficking survivors and slum dwellers in the most underprivileged areas of Bombay. In the current context, as we gradually take over again our development projects, we are also providing specific support related to the Covid-19 pandemic. Our aim is to make sure they have all the tools and resources to improve their life conditions in the best possible way.
