Summary

A second Covid-19 wave is devastating families and whole communities across India. The impact will be long-term; WEP's support will be sustainable. WEP has identified XXX students and alumnae and their families (over xxxx people in all) whose needs have become critical. WEP's strategy is 1. providing dry rations/sanitary goods parcels. 2kitchen garden seeds and chickens. 2. training on integrating this relief into livelihoods in their homes and communities -WEP Academy Ripple Effect Certificate.

Challenge

The 273 families (approximately 1,365 members) that WEP has identified are in great need. All have suffered from illness, death, employment loss, migration issues, and the shadow pandemic (domestic violence, suicide). WEP students and alumnae, young women once eager to pursue careers, now have few opportunities. Some predict that over the next 3-4 years, affected families will continue to face hunger, health issues, unemployment, and have limited resources even as the pandemic lessens.

Solution

WEP has developed a 2-step strategy: 1st. WEP will distribute sanitation/dry ration parcels, seeds, chickens and safety information to these families of 5 at a cost of 2000Rs. monthly ($27). 2nd, young women will attend WEP's Ripple Effect Certificate Program, a training on sustainable livelihood activities (kitchen gardens, community farming and chicken rearing) and dissemination of critical public safety information. WEP predicts that this strategy will address the needs of over 5000 people.

Long-Term Impact

WEP has identified 3 long-term impact indicators: 1. Sustained WEP enrollment: WEP students will remain (remotely) enrolled in its Academy program via tablet/mobile support; 2. Increase in Ripple Effect: Trained students will relay vital COVID, public health, and livelihood/entrepreneurial information to protect, inform and train their families and neighbors; 3. Ongoing sustenance and Increase in Livelihood and Entrepreneurial Activities: gardening, farming, poultry raising and other activities.
