"COVID Relief Nigeria" is a project that combines short-term relief palliatives, skills acquisition training and small business mentorship to individuals living in Communities most affected by the COVID-19 impact in Nigeria. Through material support in the form of food & medicine and diverse skills training programs, we will empower the residents who struggle to make a daily income to fend for themselves and their families. We'll also issue seed capital to them to start their own businesses.
On the 8th of May, 2020, Collett Foundation distributed palliatives to residents in the Jikwoyi community; a poor satellite town with over 450,000 people. Despite catering to the large crowd of people who sought the packages from us, we noticed there were still many more who were in dire need and our research findings highlighted that many of them had been laid off from work or lost their businesses due to the onslaught of the Covid-19 pandemic in Nigeria and its related lock-down measures.
The "COVID Relief Nigeria Project" seeks to help vulnerable people in Satellite communities like Jikwoyi and many others by providing immediate relief in the form of food and medicine to these communities. We will also deliver relevant vocational skills training to 50 people per batch, thereby fulfilling the SDG goals 1&2. After the three months of training, we will issue seed capital to these participants to help them set up their own businesses and attain financial freedom.
This Project will empower over 1000 women, 700 youths and 500 men in the Jikwoyi community alone, helping them find sustenance to survive the pandemic and empowering them to become self reliant and financially stable to provide for their families. This will in turn reduce poverty and crime in the area. It is our earnest vision to continue this project in other similar communities facing the same challenges, we will replicate our project there and create a nationwide impact in Nigeria.
