Summary

In support of the change-making force of young people, PEAC Institute, a partner organization of ICAN, will take part in a youth forum on the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Auckland, New Zealand from December 4 to 7. PEAC understands the necessity of youth involvement in high-level security discussions which implicate the safety of their future world. The participants will include young people from the Pacific Islands and international relations students from the US and Europe.

Challenge

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, TPNW, will enter into force once 50 states have ratified it. However nuclear-weapon states and their allies are continuously undermining its enforcement. To galvanize support, we will take part in a youth forum on the TPNW. We will train our students to become activists. It's a ripple effect, and it can start with you!!

Solution

Drawing upon ICAN's success, it is clear that young people have a significant voice in the field of international peace and security. The Youth Forum in New Zealand will serve as an avenue for youth to gain an understanding about the TPNW through a series of workshops. Additionally, they will formulate action plans toward a global youth movement in support of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Long-Term Impact

This youth forum will serve as a platform in which young individuals will engage in a multicultural dialogue about peacekeeping with their peers. They will also obtain a clearer understanding of the responsibilities and realities facing political actors. This project will inspire them to implement actions in their respective states in order to create a safer and more peaceful future world.
