This project will let us continue our work with creating affordable housing options in Chico, via master-leasing homes and purchasing homes, to ensure that every person in the Chico community has access to housing they can afford. CHAT seeks to help develop housing opportunities and supportive services needed to keep people in housing, while nurturing human relationships that will help people help themselves.
There are currently hundreds, possibly thousands, of people in Chico, CA who are homeless or precariously housed due to low or no incomes and a chronic lack of affordable housing. The need for affordable housing continues to grow with the effects of recent wildfires in northern California.
We master-lease houses in Chico with multiple bedrooms then sub-lease rooms to individuals who were homeless and have some income but not enough to afford a full "market-rate" rental unit. We also sub-lease houses to families and provide a case-worker. We also work with CSU-Chico to find housing for students who would be homeless. More funding would let us expand our programs to get more low-income people housed.
This funding will let us find housing for many more people who would otherwise be sleeping on the streets or in their cars, which can put a person into a downward spiral that is very hard to get our of. Our programs let people who would otherwise be homeless become productive and healthy members of society.
