GlobalGiving Project Update: A Season of Progress and Impact
This summer, Chico Housing Action Team (CHAT) has seen real movement—literally. We’re thrilled to report 10 successful move-outs to permanent, independent housing by formerly homeless individuals in our programs: three from scattered-site permanent housing programs and seven from Everhart Village, our 20-cabin shelter for people experiencing severe mental illness. These outcomes represent more than numbers—they signify milestones in recovery, trust-building, and self-sufficiency. We are deeply grateful to all our supporters for helping make these transitions possible.
Behind the Scenes: The Maintenance Team That Keeps Homes Safe
At CHAT, we manage 67 scattered-site properties across Chico, and they wouldn’t function without the dedication of our two-person maintenance team: John Crewdson and Anthony Scott. From emergency repairs to landscaping and supply hauling, they ensure our homes remain safe, clean, and dignified. Though their work is often behind the scenes, it’s absolutely central to the success of our housing programs.
Feeding the Village: Restaurant Partners and Food Program Heroes
We’ve also launched a restaurant partner initiative to provide prepared meals for Everhart Village. Thanks to Lili Da Silva of Lili’s Brazilian Bistro, residents recently enjoyed a delicious home-cooked meal. We welcome other restaurants and community members to participate by preparing one dinner per month.
Meanwhile, our Food Program, led by powerhouse volunteer Kathy Weeks, continues to deliver customized food boxes to over 140 residents monthly. Kathy alone puts in 30+ hours a week coordinating logistics and responding to dietary needs, supported by a small team of dedicated volunteers. Their impact on food security and wellness cannot be overstated.
Furniture Warehouse in Need of Volunteers
Our Furniture Warehouse, which provides gently used furniture to new residents, urgently needs Friday morning volunteers. With staffing shortages, we’ve had to limit pickups and deliveries—a gap we hope to fill with new volunteers. This work directly improves the dignity and comfort of people moving out of homelessness.
Community Connections: July 4th Parade and Volunteer Appreciation
From marching in Chico’s July 4th parade to celebrating our volunteers with an appreciation event at the Gateway Science Museum (thanks to Savor Ice Cream for the sweet treats!), CHAT has stayed connected with the community this summer. These moments remind us that our work is strengthened by collective care and celebration.
