Nigeria loses nearly 50% of its harvest after production due to poor storage and transport. These losses push up food prices and leave children underfed. Over 31 million people face food shortages, & nearly 300,000 children in northern states are at risk of severe malnutrition. This project will support 3000 smallholder farmers with storage bags and recovery tools, collect surplus food, and share it with clinics & school meal programs in five northern states (Jigawa,Benue,Bauchi, Kogi, & Kebbi).
Farmers in Nigeria lose up to half of their harvests due to poor storage, rough transport, and lack of cold rooms. Fruits rot in open trucks, grains mold before sale, and vegetables spoil before reaching buyers. At the same time, families-especially in the north-cannot afford enough food, and rates of child malnutrition are rising fast. Many children miss meals, even as safe food goes to waste. This food gap is made worse by rising prices and poor harvest recovery systems.
We will work with smallholder farmers, markets, and schools in five states to reduce food loss and recover food for redistribution. Farmers will receive airtight grain bags, crates, and simple tools to preserve their crops. Surplus food will be picked up weekly and shared with clinics and school feeding programs. Transport support will help move perishable food before it spoils. Training and direct food transfer will close the gap between farms and families who need the food.
This project will help farmers keep more of their harvest, reduce food waste, and make fresh food available to children who need it. By improving storage and food recovery in rural areas, the project supports both food producers and families who lack meals. Better harvest use and food sharing can lead to fewer missed meals, stronger children, and less pressure on household budgets. It may also serve as a simple model for food recovery in nearby regions.
