Summary

A highly destructive cyclone massacred Sofala on March 14th. The Cyclone struck just before harvest, so target groups have lost their food production for the entire year. With this project we are going to supply the Health Centres of Estaquinha, Barada and Mangunde with medicines, hygiene and cleaning products; food for the vulnerable students and communities surrounding the Missions and hygiene products to restore some dignity in this awful conditions, especially to women.

Challenge

The cyclone occurred right before the harvest, being devastating, leading to a massive loss in food and agricultural livelihoods with 1.2 million acres of crop-land destroyed. The cyclone also severely impacted access to drinking water, and the standing water has led to an increased risk for water borne diseases. Dead bodies are still in the waters causing also the spread of cholera outbreaks. Malaria cases are rising at every minute. Starvation, malnutrition, lack of medicines are the problem.

Solution

Target groups have lost their food production for the entire year. This has made them completely dependent on food aid in the immediate future. Agricultural fields have been destroyed and/or flooded, making an urgent need to restart agricultural activities in order to ensure self-production for the following season. We are going to supply the Health Centres of Estaquinha, Barada and Mangunde with medicines, hygiene and cleaning products; food for the vulnerable students and communities around.

Long-Term Impact

Cooking and eating utensils and facilities (approximately 1.500 kits), medicines (malaria tests and pills, anti-diarrhoea, mosquito nets - protection from malaria - sheets and blankets for the 3 health centres, cleaning and hygiene - including chlorine). Food for the students (2.200 people) for an entire school year. Food for the communities (2.400 people) around the 3 missions, for a total of 3 months. These measures will help a great deal on fighting the main issues now (food and health).
