Healthcare to Save Mothers and Babies

This year we are delighted to be adopting another FIVE villages: Hillat Sabil, Korla, Katonta, Kudeil and Hillat Um Gadeer.

Currently, in all five villages combined, there are 1,767 women living without access to basic everyday needs. Clean water is miles away from their villages, food is scarce and there is no healthcare, let alone healthcare for them whilst pregnant, and for their children once born.

We are going to train two women as midwives from each of these five new villages. That is 10 midwives.  Please can you help?

Can you imagine what it would be like to go through pregnancy for 9 months without a midwife? How would your mother, your wife, your sister have coped? There would be no check-ups to ensure you and your baby were healthy, there would be no equipment to ensure your baby arrived safely and there certainly would have been no post-natal care.

During birth in Darfur, the only reassurance these women have in the remote villages is a Traditional Birth Attender. She is an older lady, with no medical experience, who has survived childbirth and tries to do her best to deliver the baby safely. If, however, there is obstructred labour and they can't get the mother to hospital in time - on the back of a donkey - to have a caesaerian, she would use rope delivery which is just doesn't bear thinking about, The baby often doesn't survive and the mother is very lucky to survive.

But it doesn't have to be this way. 

$3,050 trains one woman as a midwife in Darfur, provides her with a medical kit, and a wealth of knowledge to help her sisters, neighbours, and friends deliver their babies safely, as well as give pre- and post-natal care. Not only that, but midwives must also register the births - and indeed deaths - in each of our villages and, very importantly, discourage Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). We are delighted to say that infant mortality rares are now much lower in a Kids for Kids village, and FGM is a dying practice. All because of our wonderful midwives.

The recent news of the Omicron variant puts the most vulnerable members of Darfur at great risk. Covid in any variant is even more dangerous where there is no healthcare. 

The lack of healthcare in Darfur is a constant threat, especially to children and pregnant mothers. In the villages of North Darfur, there is no health care.  If you cannot get to the regional capital El Fasher where there is a hospital then you go to Mallit - often many miles across the sand.

Can you imagine a loved one contracting Covid, and being unable to get them the urgent medical care that is needed in order to survive?   There is no diagnosis, no treatment - the hospital at Mellit has no oxygen or ventilators - so prevention has to be what people rely on. 

The villages of Darfur rely solely on the Midwives and First Aid workers that Kids for kids train. During the last surge of the pandemic, these Midwives and First Aid workers are the people that helped inform and educate the people in their villages and made a huge difference in the prevention of the virus. 

It costs Kids for Kids $2,700 to train a Village Midwife and to provide her with a smart white tobe (sari uniform) and leather sandals. Will you help us bring healthcare in the form of Village Midwives and First Aid Workers to the many villages that are in need?
