Labor Rights for domestic workers in Peru

Thirty-three domestic and care workers gathered at the Casa del Adulto Mayor in Magdalena del Mar to learn something that is part of their everyday lives: how to provide better care to an older adult.

For four hours, they talked, asked questions, shared experiences, and learned about vital signs, medications, injuries, pressure sores, common illnesses, and the emotional needs of older adults.

But the workshop was much more than a training session. It was a space to remind them that to care well for others, they also need knowledge, confidence, and tools to take care of themselves.

One participant told us:

“It was a very good and informative workshop. It helps me improve the care I provide to older adults. All this information helps me reinforce some of the things I already know.”

Another participant shared enthusiastically:

“It was excellent. I learned things I didn’t know, such as how to take someone’s temperature, how to use gauze when needed, and the importance of keeping track of their medications. I loved it. Thank you for continuing to provide us with training.”

Their words reflect something we see constantly at AGTR: when a woman has the opportunity to learn, that knowledge does not stay in the classroom. She takes it to her work, to the person she cares for, and often shares it with other women.

That is why we continue creating these spaces. Because domestic and care workers support the well-being of so many families, but they also need to be heard, trained, and cared for.
