People living with disabilities (PLWD) in Nigeria face limited access to leadership training, education, and decision-making roles. Only a small fraction hold positions in community or organizational governance, restricting their influence on policies affecting their lives. This project will provide scholarships and training to 500 PLWD, focusing on leadership, advocacy, and professional development. Equipping them with these skills is urgent to increase representation and participation.
PLWD in Nigeria are often excluded from leadership opportunities due to lack of training, inaccessible programs, and societal stigma. Many cannot access professional development programs or participate in decision-making at local or national levels. This exclusion reduces representation of their perspectives in policies and initiatives that affect their lives. Without targeted training and support, PLWD remain marginalized in leadership and governance structures.
The project will provide scholarships and structured leadership training to 500 PLWD, combining workshops, mentorship, and practical exercises. Participants will learn skills in communication, strategic planning, and organizational leadership. Assistive learning materials and accessible online courses will ensure full participation. By equipping trainees with leadership skills, the project will increase their confidence, knowledge, and ability to influence community and policy decisions.
Graduates of the program will hold leadership roles in their communities, organizations, and local governance. Increased participation of PLWD in decision-making will improve policies, programs, and services that affect them. Over time, this will reduce stigma, expand opportunities, and create a more inclusive society. The project will build a generation of skilled leaders who can represent PLWD interests and inspire others to pursue leadership roles.
