Libraries play a role in education by ensuring everyone has access to a wealth of knowledge regardless of socioeconomic circumstances. Learners of all ages and backgrounds can use these facilities to educate themselves.
A library is a center of lifelong learning, and aside from providing various books to the public, they are also locations that offer lectures, seminars, and workshops that ignite curiosity and cultivate a culture of continuous education. Many libraries assist the public in learning about and navigating life complexities, including housing needs and the healthcare system. Librarians can assist members in finding and contacting healthcare facilities, learning about mental health wellness, or even, locating specialized doctors in the big cities (our community libraries are located in small villages in Guatemala).
The importance of community libraries extends beyond shelves of books and educational resources. They are cores of cultural diversity and inclusivity and offer safe spaces for community gatherings. Libraries offer meeting rooms and event spaces for various groups, from book clubs to art shows, which unite individuals in sharing their passions and perspectives. Engaging in these activities creates a sense of belonging within the community and empathy for others.
Inclusivity in libraries applies to all comers. Seniors can attend events and make new friends, helping to prevent feelings of loneliness and isolation. Teenagers can meet in specific spaces to study, socialize, and learn about each other. New mothers can connect with other moms during baby story-times. In these ways, libraries serve as a beacon of community-building connections.
Highly valued by the community it serves, each Riecken library goes well beyond traditional library activities, providing space where local issues are analyzed and discussed, and people read and research to identify local solutions together as a community. Today, in Honduras and Guatemala where political strife, violence and desperate economic conditions prevail, this can be critical to their very chances for survival.
Introducing the modern American library to Central America has brought positive change to the lives of individuals, their families, and their communities. As a key driver of this new paradigm, Riecken Community Libraries celebrates a culture and tradition of innovation each time one of its libraries opens its doors. In this process Riecken is proud to advocate for its partners and the US values Riecken brings to the region. But the most important thing of all is that it will be the same community, represented by volunteer community leaders, that will transparently oversee the management of the library, and, by extension, leading programming based on access to information, reading and participation. youth. Programming aimed at the development of your community.
Palestina de Los Altos Community Library, El Tejar Community Library and, Caratina Community Library soon, as well as the rest of the community libraries that are part of the Riecken network, with support from USAID/ASHA (American Schools and Hospitals Abroad), have improved their technological equipment, their collection of books and furniture. Riecken community libraries, with support from USAID/ASHA, will continue to help transform a single building block -- a community library with free computers, internet, print resources and programs -- into a springboard for democracy building, local leadership development, women’s empowerment, civic engagement and social justice in Guatemala. Riecken community Libraries are a demonstration and promotion American principles of inclusiveness and equality, civic engagement, free expression and independent inquiry. Together with the USAID / ASHA program, we will give a concrete response to promote community cohesion.
