A healthy reading habit can transform a person, and access to books and reading material relevant to the target group can transform a community. Mobile Rural Libraries is our goal to overcome the lack of access of reading materials for schools or libraries that lie beyond the library building, especially in the rural areas. We deliver the reading material the people need to their doorsteps. Through these Rura;l Mobile Libraries rural comminities keep themselves abreast of latest news: from around the world; information regarding modern agricultural techniques; government programmes which directly benefit them; and modern literature for reading for pleasure. Rural Mobile Libraries cater to all age groups, and the initiative has been well received in places beyond the library walls. Adults have taken to reading with great enthusiasm while adolescents and children have also shown encouraging participation.
Libraries of the world introduced the mobile library concept to serve schools and individuals in rural areas where there were no public libraries exist. The mobile library service makes it possible for information to be more readily accessible to rural communities and provides an opportunity for patrons to be exposed to the wealth of knowledge that exists outside of their communities. Riecken Libraries today house more than books, and librarians are more than good stewards of materials. Both have evolved to meet the changing needs of their users, by embracing technological advancements. Libraries are still a place filled with information, imagination, and community and librarians are an essential part of the system because of their knowledge, skill and passion.
Community Libraries continue to be harbingers for freedom, communication, creativity and advancement, and librarians will continue to bring the information to life for many children, teens and adults alike. And like other public libraries in the world, community libraries promote services to reach people who live in isolated places. As is the case of the library My world of knowledge, of Parramos in Guatemala.
Educational materials are prepared in advance to deliver to communities via mobile libraries. More than 200 books, didactic material, educational games are put together to bring mobile libraries to remote communities of the municipality of Parramos who have restricted access to reading due to distance and the spread of the virus. Jesica, the librarian, and Dulce are responsible for energizing the mobile libraries. From early on, they prepare themselves with everything they need to bring the world of reading to more than 50 boys and girls who gather to listen to story hours, more than 30 parents are present to train them on how to stimulate their children to read.
During the day there are games, art activities with painting and activities that promote physical expression, motor skills and creativity. It has been an engaging experience with a social impact that has raised the profile of our library by expanding services despite constantly facing be infected. The mobile libraries contain materials to benefit people of all ages.
Parramos Community Library in Guatemala, as well as the rest of the community libraries that are part of the Riecken network have improved their technological equipment, their collection of books and furniture. At the end of Octobre 2021, the Library will have also completed all of the recent renovation works. Riecken community libraries, with support from USIAD/ASHA American Schools and Hospitals Abroad) will continue to help transform a single building block -- a community library with free computers, internet, print resources and programs -- into a springboard for democracy building, local leadership development, women’s empowerment, civic engagement and social justice in Guatemala.
Riecken community Libraries are a demonstration and promotion American principles of inclusiveness and equality, civic engagement, free expression and independent inquiry. Together with the USAID / ASHA program, we will give a concrete response to promote community cohesion, so damaged by the current situation. We are proud to see the flexibility of the Riecken Community Library sustainability model in action, allowing for relevant local response to this worldwide calamity.
Riecken Community Libraries are a social platform and an essential space for the social cohesion present in 12 communities in Guatemala.
