Last September 7 a devastating 8.2-magnitude earthquake struck the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico. Approximately 2.3 million people were affected and the number of deaths increased to 90. In addition, the tropical storms and hurricanes that have impacted this area have complicate the situation. Thousands of people have lost their homes and are living with no roof in raining, with high health risk.
A state of emergency has been declared for the southern states of Oaxaca and Chiapas following the devastating 8.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the region on September 7, whose epicenter was located off the Pacific coast approximately 90 km (55 mi) southwest of Pijijiapan (Chiapas). The destruction is widespread. Some 6000 communities and hundreds of thousands of people were affected; at least 98 deaths have been confirmed as of September 12.
This fund will provide relief in the form of emergency supplies like food, water, medicine and psychological support, in addition to longer-term recovery assistance to help residents recover and rebuild. We are a Mexican NGO located at Chiapas, that works with local communities. We will provide long-term support for survivors of the earthquake, such as geological analysis and appropriate construction techniques. Donations to this fund have the potential to build stronger response capacity so that these organizations are better equipped to face future challenges.
