Thank you for your generous donation to the East Africa Hunger Relief Fund. Donations to this GlobalGiving fund are contributing to a critical effort to combat life-threatening hunger across East Africa. Communities in the region are confronting prolonged drought alongside new and ongoing conflicts.

Since our last update, donations to the East Africa Hunger Relief Fund have supported more than five grants to high-impact and community-led organizations at the forefront of the fight against hunger in countries including Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan.

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you are supporting:

  • Humanitarian Relief and Development Council (HRDC) is a Somali organization responding to the water, hygiene, sanitation, and protection needs of communities affected by flooding and conflict in Somalia, including recent fighting in the Las Anod region. HRDC is providing immediate relief through food and medicine, as well as longer-term support for farmers and people vulnerable to the impacts of the climate crisis.
  • Hope Health Action is a Ugandan organization supporting refugees from South Sudan with critical nutrition and livelihood assistance. Many of the people that Hope Health Action supports have disabilities that put them at greater risk of experiencing hunger and its impacts. Hope Health Action is also addressing the nutrition needs of children in refugee camps through vital supplement distributions.
  • Seed Programs International works with community-led partners in the region to support agriculture and farmers’ needs. Seed Program’s partners include Kaalmo in Somalia, which provides drought-resistant seeds to farmers while also addressing emergency needs arising from recent flooding, and Grow East Africa in Ethiopia, which is responding to the impact of drought in Burji.
  • Sadagaat-USA  is an organization led by members of the Sudanese diaspora mobilizing a response to the eruption of conflict in Sudan in April. Sadagaat is working with partners to sponsor food distributions and shelter for people seeking refuge from fighting in the capital, Khartoum. This grant to Sadagaat complements a grant from the GlobalGiving Sudan Emergency Fund in support of overall humanitarian needs in Sudan.

Your support of the GlobalGiving East Africa Hunger Relief Fund powers community-led responses. Investing in these communities makes a difference as the region confronts drought and conflicts that have an impact across local, national, and international borders. You can learn more about the situation here

As our partners’ critical work continues and the needs grow, we will share more updates with you about the impact of your donation. You can find a full list of nonprofits that recently received grants at the end of this report.

With gratitude,

Sarah + the GlobalGiving Team

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
