An update on your donation to the East Africa Hunger Relief Fund

Thank you for your generous contribution to the East Africa Hunger Relief Fund. Your donations continue to make a difference, ensuring communities have access to food, water, sustainable livelihoods, and urgent assistance across the region, including in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan.

Since we last updated you, your contribution to the fund supported seven grants to high-impact, vetted partners. We met many of these partners when we visited Ethiopia and Kenya a few months ago. They reminded us that climate change continues to make conditions worse for their communities and drives up food insecurity and displacement.

They shared how important it is to incorporate and prioritize peacebuilding even when confronting active conflict. With nearly 64 million people needing humanitarian and protection assistance across the Horn of Africa, our partners are stepping up to fill gaps, thanks to your support.

With this context in mind, here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported:

Ethiopian Center for Disability & Development (ECDD) is an Ethiopian-led organization serving people with disabilities. In Ethiopia, 15.8 million people are facing crisis or emergency levels of hunger with the UN warning of famine-like conditions on the horizon. ECDD provides forcibly displaced people from conflict-affected areas, like Tigray and Amhara, with food, cash assistance, and longer-term livelihood opportunities that enable them to be self-sufficient. To support security and well-being for all, the organization works with families of the disabled and host communities receiving displaced people so inter-communal tensions do not arise.
Centre for Peace and Democracy (CPD) is a Somali nonprofit focusing on peacebuilding, food security, livelihoods, and development. In coordination with other actors, CDP is addressing the needs of thousands of displaced Somalis driven from their homes by conflict and from the severe floods in the fall of 2023. CPD provides several services, from food and medical aid to coordination among first responders to assist communities in emergencies.
Water for South Sudan (WFSS) was created by former “Lost Boys of Sudan” who escaped conflict on foot during Sudan’s civil war in the early 2000s. Based in New York, the organization focuses on creating sustainable water systems for rural communities across South Sudan. The WFSS team continues to respond to local requests to rehabilitate wells while training community members on well maintenance and hygiene so families can prosper. With the influx of refugees from the war in Sudan, WFSS is now also coordinating with the UN to construct latrines and wells in new refugee camps and is conducting nutrition screenings for malnourished children. With extreme heat across the country causing school closures and power cuts, access to safe, sustainable water is more important than ever.

An update on your donation to the East Africa Hunger Relief Fund

Thank you for your generous donation to the East Africa Hunger Relief Fund. Your contributions to this GlobalGiving Fund are making a big difference, especially now as our partners respond to devastating floods across Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya.

The floods come during a heavier rainy season alongside the global El Niño phenomenon. This weather has contributed to deeper food insecurity and displacement, especially in the context of funding cuts for international food aid. We visited many of our partners in Kenya and Ethiopia earlier this year and witnessed the power of supporting community-led responses in the region.

Since our last report, donations from the East Africa Hunger Relief Fund have supported three grants to high-impact and community-led nonprofit organizations at the forefront of addressing East Africa’s food crisis—and now the El Niño-triggered floods.

Through a grant from this fund, you supported the work of GlobalGiving partner Gift of the Givers. Here’s what they had to say about the current situation:

“Your immediate support is crucial for Gift of the Givers in addressing the dire humanitarian crisis triggered by El Nino's devastating floods in Somalia…With 90% of businesses closed, Bardhere [city] faces economic decline, amplifying threats to overcrowded settlements and escalating disease outbreaks. Urgent intervention is vital.” - Waqful Waqifin Foundation (Gift of the Givers Foundation)

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported:

Nomadic Assistance for Peace and Development (NAPAD) is in Somalia, providing clean water, life-saving non-food items like hygiene kits, as well as procuring and distributing mosquito nets to over 3,000 vulnerable community members to mitigate the risk of vector-borne diseases such as malaria. Additionally, in Ethiopia, NAPAD will aid the affected riverine villages in Dollow by providing food aid, water, and hygiene services.

Waqful Waqifin Foundation (Gift of the Givers Foundation), has been working in Somalia since 2004 and is now helping to provide sandbags, food, emergency shelter, latrines, plastic sheets, jerrycans, clean water, and motorized boats for evacuations in Somalia. Gift of the Givers has significant experience in disaster response across the African continent and beyond.

Horn of Africa Development Initiative (HODI) is leading a response to flooding in northern Kenya—specifically Marsabit, an area affected by serious food insecurity as well as conflict. HODI aims to support approximately 200 households—over 1200 people—with essential items like food, blankets and water disinfectants. Marsabit County has faced both devastating drought and flooding in recent years.

An update on your donation to the East Africa Hunger Relief Fund

Thank you for your generous donation to the East Africa Hunger Relief Fund. Donations to this GlobalGiving fund continue to make a difference, providing access to safe and clean water, responding to destructive floods, and supporting farmers. Your support is reaching communities across the region as they combat historic drought, flooding, and devastating food insecurity.

Since our last update, donations from the East Africa Hunger Relief Fund supported three grants to high-impact and community-led nonprofit organizations at the forefront of this crisis.

Here is a short description of some of the critical work you’ve supported:

Nomadic Assistance for Peace and Development (NAPAD) is a regional partner working across Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia. Your donation will strengthen NAPAD’s work in Ethiopia, where they recently repaired and solarized a critical borehole in Ethiopia's Somali state. GlobalGiving previously supported their work in Somalia, where NAPAD’s school feeding program served hundreds of girls who have been displaced.

Adeso is an Africa-based non-governmental organization working in Kenya, Somalia, and South Sudan. Your donation will support Adeso in its ongoing work in Somalia, focused on creating greater water access for communities and building community food security. The funds will allow Adeso to work with an agro-pastoral community whose crops and livelihoods were devastated by flash floods in Bari, Somalia, earlier this year. Adeso will also work with communities on flood prevention and ensure sustainability for their families and livelihoods.

Drylands Natural Resources Centre (DNRC) is a Kenyan partner working with farmers and communities to fight soil degradation, food insecurity, and poverty in Kenya's drylands. Among other areas, DNRC is working with hundreds of farmers in groups and schools in Makueni County. Some of their programs include enabling farmers to invest in reforestation using drought-resistant indigenous tree species, addressing deforestation, and trainings.

We also complemented the work of GlobalGiving’s Tigray Famine and Crisis Relief Fund to support a partner working on food insecurity in Ethiopia. As the Tigray Famine and Crisis Relief Fund comes to a close, we will continue to support our partners in Ethiopia through this East Africa Hunger Relief Fund. The needs remain enormous there as conflict spreads and food aid was disrupted earlier this year.
