Consensual same-sex conduct is criminalized in nine Caribbean countries under colonial-era laws. In varying degrees, criminalisation negatively impacts the rights of LGBTI persons to freedom of association, expression, dignity, equality, privacy and family life. It drives negative public attitudes that are often reinforced by politicians, the media and faith-based leaders leading to prejudice, intolerance, discrimination, and violence including serious harm and death.
ECADE's 5-country legal challenge and cross regional media campaigns aim to de-criminalise adult, consensual, same-sex intimacy and inspire change in attitudes towards our LGBTQ+ family through information and visibility. Formed in 2015, ECADE works to strengthen regional capacity for the security and full recognition of human rights and seeks to engage experts from diverse sectors across the Caribbean and the globe to achieve this through research, advocacy and ccampaigns .
Ultimately we hope to help end discrimination towards people on the basis of their sexual orientation and gender identity and to realise a Caribbean society that promotes a culture of human rights, equality, justice and respect for all LGBTQI people.
