Summary

This project will employ and support the Madhima Gulgan Community Association and their professional bush regeneration team to help Rainforest Rescue plant trees, remove invasive weeds and regenerate and reforest the last remaining fragmented remnants of The Big Scrub, a Critically Endangered lowland rainforest in northern New South Wales. This project will also help this local indigenous community gain invaluable "green" employment and training opportunities.

Challenge

Once the largest sub-tropical rainforest in New South Wales (NSW), today less than 1% remains. Now, fragmented remnants are isolated and scattered across 75,000 hectares containing over 300 species of trees and shrubs. The most diverse ecosystem in NSW, The Big Scrub remnants support 38 threatened species of fauna and 61 threatened species of flora, yet these remnants require care and maintenance. Vigorously growing invasive weeds have suffocated plants and degraded forest.

Solution

Rainforest Rescue is working to protect and extend this natural treasure. By employing the services of an Indigenous bush regeneration team, we are providing training in Conservation & Land Management and eco-friendly employment opportunities to traditional people of the area who hold a "spiritual" connection to country and are committed to rainforest restoration. This in turn will help advance capacity building through the provision of employment opportunities for the community.

Long-Term Impact

By creating reliable and steady eco-friendly employment and training opportunities for the Madhima Gulgan Community Association, we will be helping to ensure the long-term survival and expansion of this great and ancient rainforest while also helping to assist in the shaping of a long-term "green" model of success for this proud and remarkable Aboriginal organization.
