Thank YOU for helping Ecuador rebuild!

On April 16th 2016, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the central coast of Ecuador, killing more than 550 and damaging infrastructure along coastal regions including Manabí, Esmeraldas, Santa Elena, Guayas, Santo Domingo, and Los Ríos. The need for emergency supplies and basic necessities was high, but you responded. Here is a brief update of the help you supported:

  • Corporacion Grupo Randi Randi continues to provide a cultural center for earthquake victims. They are ‘turning disaster into opportunity’ by using time spent in the center to learn skills and build projects, hoping this will move towards initiatives and NGOs. The center also serves as a safe place for discussion on gender issues, child security, and other human rights issues. With the support you provided, they have bought books, sewing machines, land, and reconstructed the shelter.
  • The team at Fundacion Clara Luna are among the few organizations still working with children affected in the northern part of Manabi. By running mobile libraries and community centers, Clara Luna helps to lessen the burden of home displacement and earthquake trauma on children. All summer long, the children learned about emotions, diversity, tolerance, and empathy through storytelling and theatre.
  • Over one year later, CARE’s earthquake relief response has provided help to over 37,000 people in 118 communities, coordinating with the UN and the Ecuadorian government to help those affected most. Their programs range from Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), to providing shelter and psychosocial support.
  • Yachana Foundation is continuing skills training to Ecuadorians impacted by the 2016 earthquake. This includes training in masonry, welding, and developing sustainable farming technology. Two products developed so far include a bicycle powered corn grinder and a corn dehusker, which Yachana hopes will support rural communities most impacted by the earthquake.

All this and more is possible because of the support you provided. We are now closing this fund, but if you are interested in continuing to support Ecuador going forward, check out these projects on GlobalGiving.

Thank you for your response to rebuilding Ecuador!

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
