Sending you a reason to smile

Dear friends,

We have all been living in uncertain times. Hope that during this unnatural order of things we are experiencing, you have found comfort in your loved ones. Thanks to technology, we can minimize the effects of isolation and still feel a part of each other’s lives and worlds.

OBAT’s educational programs in Bangladesh have been closed as well as a preventative measure against COVID-19. The potential for the disease to spread is high and can lead to disastrous consequences due to the cramped living conditions as well as the lack of hygiene in the camps. You can read more about what OBAT is doing to ensure the safety of the camp residents here.

OBAT has also been carrying out distrbutions of food staples to camp families including those of our students. These families rely on daily wages for survival and with those coming to an abrupt halt, feeding themselves is increasingly difficult. Read about our food distributions here. Masks are also being sewn and distributed by OBAT's Youth Think Tank Volunteers.

In this grim atmosphere, we wanted to give you a reason to smile and would like to introduce you to one of the students who is thriving with the help of your support.

Meet Samsad!

“My name is Samsad. I am a student of OBAT’s Preschool in Chittagong. I am six years old. I live in the BW-1 Camp in Khulsi, Chittagong.

My father’s name is Alam and he is a daily laborer. My mother’s name is Rina. She stays at home with us.

I have three brothers. My older brother studies in class two at OBAT’s Elementary School.

My parents always take care of us. They love me very much. We face lots of problems at home as my father doesn’t earn much but we are happy.

I enjoy my school. I like my teachers and my books. My teacher does lots of fun stuff in class. That is why I never miss school. I like to eat blackberries. Blue is my favorite color. I also like to play football. When I finish studying, I want to become a policeman so I can catch thieves.”

Thank you for your gift of an education to Samsad. You can be sure there will be fewer thieves around when he grows up!

We hope that the next time we get in touch with you, our world has gained some normalcy. Meanwhile, do keep the camp residents in your prayers. You will always be in ours.

Be well,

Your friends at OBAT.
