Educate a Girl, Educate a Nation - iraq

Many girls in remote areas of iraq do not have access to schools or to free, quality education. Increasing social and economic pressures force children living in poverty to drop out of school at a young age to support their family. This is especially true for girls, who often end up working in fields or factories, becoming vulnerable to life-long struggle and exploitation.

The opportunity to complete an education has been proven to help end poverty, lifelong struggle, exploitation and abuse. BAORD currently has more than 150 students from pre-school to grade 12 from all regions of Iraq. In the words of Project Manager Enas, “If the school does not help take care of these girls, their problems will multiply. I do not want to see these groups of children increase in society. What we are doing is a preventive solution to the problem, and currently we are helping and supporting them through financial grants and stationery Clothes, psychological support, education on the computer and education of their mothers, let the girls go back to school and not marry early.

We aim to provide millions of girls across Iraq with safe, quality, gender-transforming education so they can find their voice and learn to lead. We work to ensure that girls know they are equally deserving of the skills needed to succeed.

We focus our efforts on equality, inclusion and diversity. Our programs work in the classroom not only with teachers, but also with communities, governments, religious leaders, family members, and children to end gender inequality in education.

School is a space where girls exercise their agency, make their voices heard, and get their first leadership opportunities.

Not only does dropping out of school have dire consequences for girls' life chances - it puts them at risk of teenage pregnancy, child marriage, female genital mutilation and other forms of gender-based violence.
Empowering girls to make a difference. It gives girls the skills to become leaders, innovators, and change-makers, and to deal with future crises.

Unless world leaders step up and invest adequately in education, there is a risk that the climate emergency will lead to millions more girls missing out on school in the coming years.

Increased investment in education and girls’ leadership will play an essential role in ensuring girls and young women are able to demand their rights, hold decision makers to account, and challenge the status quo, including the systems and norms which reinforce gender and climate injustice around the iraq.
