20 Years of Making the Impossible Possible
By Amalia Howard | Digital Marketing Manager

It started in 1998 with a dream to transform the lives of impoverished children and break the cycle of poverty. Now with two learning centers in India, one in South Africa, one in Mexico and four in the United States and a new school opening in Jamaica next year, our global results prove that the Christel House model WORKS.
Your support has transformed the lives of hundreds of Christel House Academy students as they build brighter futures than they previously thought possible. 78% of 2017 Christel House graduates earned an Academic Honors Diploma, compared to 19% in the neighboring district. Additionally, 68% of Christel House graduates are pursuing post-secondary education, a strong number compared to 28% of 2015 Indianapolis Public School grads.
Lexes is a great example of a successful Christel House graduate. Lexes was part of the first graduating class of Christel House Academy South. Now a senior at The University of Indianapolis, this outstanding student will graduate in May and then start work at Ernst & Young this summer. “The opportunities Christel House has offered me have been stepping stones in preparing me for college and for life after,” she shared. Thank you for making the impossible possible for students like Lexes!

Full Scholarships For Christel House Grads

College education costs are often prohibitive for students lacking economic resources. But, the University of Indianapolis is changing all that for CHA-South graduates earning Honors Diplomas. Qualified graduates will automatically be entitled to a four-year full-tuition scholarship to UIndy, strengthening the longtime partnership between the two schools. Room-and-Board scholarships will also available.
“We have such a wonderful relationship with Christel House educators and students, and this program ensures we will continue as partners to strengthen our neighboring families and that we will provide opportunities for these students to get a world-class education at UIndy,” said University President Rob Manuel.
Manuel joined Christel House students and families for an official launch of the scholarship program in the UIndy Health Pavilion on campus. The announcement was followed by a campus tour before the group was recognized during the annual Pack-the-Night UIndy Greyhound basketball game.
“We are thrilled that the University of Indianapolis is offering these scholarships for our students at Christel House Academy South,” says Carey Dahncke, Head of Schools, Christel House Academy. “Christel House Academy is proud of our academic achievements that have allowed our students to standout from what you typically expect to see in urban education. Nearly all of our students live in poverty, and the opportunity to attend a four year university escapes many because of the financial commitment. So, the opportunity and generosity UIndy is providing will be a game changer for many of our graduates. It is simply an amazing opportunity that will forever change the lives of many.”

Burgandie (L) gets support with College & Careers
Burgandie, a freshman at the University of Indianapolis, is an Honors graduate from Christel House Academy South who is benefiting greatly from the Christel House College & Careers program. Kara Moreland, College & Careers Administrator for Christel House Schools, regularly communicates with Burgandie about her progress. “I just knew I wanted to go to UIndy” says Burgandie. Moreland assisted her through the complicated college loan process, even going with her to the financial aid office on campus. “The first year is the most difficult for students; there are so many questions and challenges,” says Moreland. “By sophomore year the students become more independent.” College & Careers support and encouragement guides students for five years after they graduate from Christel House. Its goal is to help them become integrated into the workforce and on a pathway to self-sufficiency. Graduates regularly return to share their insights with students and teachers on their experiences after Christel House. “They tell us what works and offer feedback on what needs to be stronger to help future graduates,” says Moreland. “Our teachers are very receptive to adjusting their lesson plans based on that communication. It’s a great feedback loop to help Christel House continuously improve.”
