Project Report | Jan 17, 2025
Educating Displaced Children in Somalia for a Year

By Dr. Abdullahi Hersi | Executive Director

Introduction

This project aims at improving access to quality education among children affected by displacement due to conflict, insecurity, and natural disasters such as droughts and floods caused by the impacts of climate change in Somalia, particularly in the Banadir region. As a result, many of these children lack access to basic educational opportunities, hindering their ability to acquire skills for a better future. This report highlights the progress made by the project, focusing on the support provided to displaced children in Koshin IDP Primary School, located in Garasbaley district, Banadir region of Somalia. It also outlines how the generous donations raised through the GlobalGiving platform have been used to meet the educational needs of these children.

Impact at Koshin IDP Primary School

With the support of the funds raised, NAPAD (Nomadic Assistance for Peace and Development) provided essential learning materials, including stationery and supplies, to support the education of 17 displaced children (10 girls and 7 boys) at Koshin IDP Primary School. These children are among the most affected by displacement and socio-economic challenges in Somalia and are also part of the 197,000 recently displaced and evicted households in the Banadir region.

The learning materials provided are making a difference in the classroom experience for these children. They are now better equipped to engage with their lessons and improve their academic outcomes. By providing the necessary resources and focusing on vulnerable children in IDP schools, NAPAD is helping to create opportunities for displaced children to overcome the barriers to education caused by their difficult circumstances.

Conclusion

NAPAD is grateful for the collective support from donors through GlobalGiving. The funds raised have made it possible to provide essential learning resources to 17 of the most vulnerable displaced children, giving them the tools they need to continue with their education. NAPAD remains committed to supporting displaced children in Somalia and ensuring they have access to quality education. Continued donor support is important to address the ongoing challenges faced by displaced communities and ensuring long-term impact.
