Educate girls and fight poverty in Kenya

Since founding Women's Global Education Project in 2004, what has kept me motivated and excited for the future is the stories of the talented, resilient young women in our programs. In regions of rural Tharaka-nithi county, Kenya where fewer than 15% of girls graduate high school, WGEP scholars are breaking barriers, defying expectations, and charting new paths for women in their communities!

In November 2022, I traveled to Kenya for the first time since the pandemic began, and met Rael & Dorothy, two scholars at Tharaka University. Rael is 20 years old, and is studying Computer Science. She is interested in machine learning, and dreams of becoming a software engineer, or inventing something to improve the world! Dorothy is one of seven children, and shared that she feels at home in her first year of college. Through WGEP's support, she is able to focus on her studies, avoid peer pressure, and make lots of friends! Dorothy is studying English Literature, and says her dream would be to become a teacher, and pass on the power of education to her sisters and the wider community.

Rael & Dorothy are just two of the 1,000+ women and girls in our scholarship program this year. Their stories and dreams fill me with hope, and I could not be prouder of them for pursuing their dreams. It costs just $350 to support a student like Rael or Dorothy with a year-long scholarship - thank you for making a difference in the lives of these incredible young women.

Women's Global Education Project works together with girls, women, their families and communities to enrich girls' knowledge, confidence, leadership, and inspire a love of learning, so girls are better able to make their own life decisions and lead healthier, happier lives.

We provide comprehensive school scholarships and mentoring to girls, reproductive health workshops, and after-school clubs. We host community outreach and mobilization activities to better educate parents, boys, and community members on the importance of girls’ education.

Purity is a high school student and WGEP scholar who dreams of becoming a lawyer so that she can fight for the rights of poor people in her community, inspired by her experiences dealing with family land disputes.

Magdalena, a 3rd grader, recently joined Purity at a back-to-school meeting for WGEP scholars. Magdalena dreams of following in her sister's footsteps as a WGEP scholar so that she can one day become a doctor! She is determined to be a doctor because of her mother’s health complications. Purity's scholarship motivates Magdalenda to work hard so that she can finish primary school, go on to secondary school, and pursue her dreams!
