A new cycle of activities for 2024
By Valentina DI Felice | Head of Evidence and Learning
Between March and April 2024, Womanity was able to launch three new online classes in coding and web development. They are attended by approximately 70 female students who were enrolled in STEM universities before the Taliban bans.
We are also in the process to finalise the curricula for two new additional online courses that will launch in May and be completed between July and August.
In parallel, as requested by the Taliban regime, we have been working to a national NGO to collaborate on the implementation of the eight community based education (CBE) classes in Bagrami. Currently, we are waiting for the Memorandum with the Ministry of Education to be finalized. In 2024, we plan to expand our CBE projects to 20 classes, and therefore, we are currently selecting the additional 12 classes. Our criteria is that at least 70% of student sin CBE classes are girls.

During 2023, we were able to conduct six courses (lasting two months) in computer literacy, coding, and web development. Of the 186 students enrolled, 137 (74%) completed the training and 49 (26%) dropped out. 66% (120 students) completed the training with an attendance rate of 70% of classes or above and 51% (94 students) obtained an end of course mark of 70% or above.
Womanity provided internet connection to all students and trainers.
All in all, our classes were highly appreciated and described as much needed for female students who want to continue their education and careers paths.
We also took over from War Child Canada (WCC), 8 CBE classes in Bagrami supporting education in grade 2 for 238 children (67% girls) from April 2023. This activity is approved by the de facto authority, and we are acting within a Memorandum of Understanding signed by them.
As per the Authority policy, if students drop by the mid-term exam, new out-of-school children can join classes and therefore we were able to enrol additional 28 students in the second term for a total of 267 students with 234 finishing the academic year.
87.3% of the 267 students enrolled during the year (first and second term) successfully completed the final exam at the end of December.
In 5 classes, the average of the marks to the final exam was above 85% while for two classes was 83.8% and 80.6% respectively. In the least performing class this average is 68%.
During the year, we distributed educational kits, stationery and hygiene kits as well as coordinated the activities of the school management shura, liaised with the district education department and trained teachers.

Following our previous report, Womanity has now activated the second pillar of its strategic work in Afghanistan:
- In September we launched online courses in computer literacy and coding languages for girls
Currently we are running 4 short term courses for approx. 100 students, and we are about to start two additional classes (for approx. 50). Subjects vary from computer literacy to basic and advanced coding languages.
- Community based education for children in primary school ~70% are girls.
We are continuing our support tp 8 classes in Bagrami district with 240 children (67% girls). Children are in grade 2 and have just completed mid-term exam in August. We distributed books, teachers' and children's education material as well as hygiene kits. We also equipped the classes while rooms have been made available by the communities.
