Mammadu outing to the ocean

By Agnes Albrecht | Founder and Project Leader

On the boat trip

Dear all, this time i want to tell you about our last outing to Swakopmund , a Namibian Town on the Atlantic ocean.

You must think that most of our kids never saw the sea before, so the expectations were very high. Only the kids with a good final year report were allowed to come with and the last days were really agonizing for them. Finally we got the reports and they were good so every body was going to Swakopmund. Really a blessing because it would have been very hard to leave somebody behind, surly for the kid but form me too!

Monday the 8th December our adventure begun, we could fit all in a Toyota Quantum 14 Seater, kindly offered from Desert Car, a local car hire and a pick up, and off we went.

As soon as we arrived and off loaded the baggage in the hostel we went to the beach. The Atlantic is a cold and rough sea, so not really the best for the first seawater experience for children. At the beginning the kids were a bit overwhelmed and astonished but soon they could not resist and just ran into the water and started playing with the waves. No way to get them out soon, they had such a fun and there similes of joy were huge. They collected everything, shells, stones and any other magic things coming out from the water. Eyes wide opened Petrus told me: Mami the sea is so big!! Well my eyes were wide opened too as a kept on counting them constantly, too worried to loose one of them in the waves!

Tuesday we visited Weimann’s Carpentry, one of the most important carpentries here in Namibia I believe. It was very interesting and instructive, for me it’s always important to show them new prospective, opportunities for their future lives and create interests in them. I truly believe it’s important for their education. Dennis infect was so interested that he immediately started helping, he enjoyed touching the would and checking on the machines. We got breakfast in the carpentry but we also got a little house for Mammadu so that the kids can ply in it. All is first designed in 3D on a Pc and then the project goes to a machine, the Hundegger machine, which cuts the wood precisely. All the pieces are then put together without screws or nails. Dennis helped a lot during this process. Once the house is built up at Mammadu and decorated by the kids I will send you the pictures too.

In the afternoon we visited the aquarium to learn about fishes and other sea creatures, we even saw some little sharks.

Wednesday we went on a boats tour in Walvisbay, actually we were on a Catamaran, seals and pelicans were already waiting for us. As the seals even jump on the boat we could see them very close and learn their names, one is called Necklace. Also the pelicans come very close and land on the boat, these birds have very long peaks which are a bit frightening. So the kids told them to move a bit away as we are no fishes to eat for them, it was a very polite way but didn’t really work as these birds came closer and closer till the captain didn’t give them the very much expected fish.

The afternoon we spent on the dunes Sand boarding. What means that you first have to walk up the dune to be able then to slide sitting on the board down the dune. It is a bit tiring and very hot but it is also very very funny and the kids enjoyed it a lot. Nadja our volunteer from Switzerland is a very good snowboarder, so she came down the dunes like a goodness and we were all very proud of here. The only bad thing was that at the end it seams you were Sand bathing rather then Sand boarding!!

In the evening the kids were so tired that the fall asleep during dinner, not even a Schnitzel could keep them awake!

I want to thank you all, thank you for sharing with us the joyful moments and the less joyful ones, thank you for helping us reaching our goals and for supporting us but most of all thank you for your love for our kids. This year 2015 we want to built our hostel at Mammadu, were kids then will be able to stay over night. There is a big need for it and for Mammadu it will be a huge step forward. The other objective for this year is to implement our new workshop so that kids but also other family members can learn new skills and techniques.

You are more then wellcome to send me your ideas or ask me questions about our children and Mammadu.

A big hug from all of Mammadu
