We are all fine

From our Archive, beginning 2020 BC (before Corona)

Greetings to all my dear friends

Yes, we are all fine. Our general lockdown started on 28th March, everything was closed, only the most essential shops were open and everyone had to stay at home. Initially the lockdown was scheduled until 17th April, but was then extended to 4th May. The country was then in Phase 2 from 5. May to 1. June during which time restrictions were eased and it was possible to move around freely again.

We are now in Phase 3 where everything is almost normal, except that our borders are still closed. At Mammadu we are again permitted to engage and work with our children, obviously adhering to social distancing rules and wearing masks. Thanks to having internet at Mammadu the kids can attend distance learning classes. We still distribute food in the form of take-aways because restaurants are not yet permitted to work and one is not allowed to sit together at a table. Masks are compulsory even while driving alone in a car.

During this entire time we continued paying our staff their salaries and distributed meals to the our children’s families in the form of take-aways. The private schools started with distance learning as soon as lockdown was announced, while the public schools prepared paper copies of the learning material which then had to be fetched regularly. In the mean time the schools have started with normal contact lessons for the older learners. As from 22. June the pre-schoolers and kids up to Grade 3 can attend school as usual, and schools will open for all learners at the beginning of July.

At present masks are still compulsory. I hope that this restriction will be eased because it is really not healthy for children to breathe through their masks the entire morning.

Initially Namibia had 16 Covid-19 cases, most of which were imported. Even now there are still imported cases periodically. To control these outbreaks, people entering the country have to “do their time“ in quarantine for several weeks.

Two weeks ago we unfortunately had a burglary where all our gas bottles were stolen, and we were left with a broken wheelbarrow, lock and fence. Obviously we were upset about it, but, I must say, it is somehow understandable because the people here are go through very hard times indeed.

As always I wish to thank all of you for your continued help and support. Our Mammadu family is getting bigger and bigger, and it is really good to know that you are there for us. Please take care of yourself.

Many warm hugs and kisses from all of us.
