As well as supporting such activities as homework clubs and arts and crafts initiatives, we have been keen to promote good education in the classroom as well.
A recent visit to a rural school in Moldova has found that despite excellent teaching staff, and a willingness for the students to learn, they all held back by poor, or many areas, non-existent equipment.
There is very little useable equipment to undertake any practical science lessons in chemistry, biology and physics. Virtually all lessons are theory (only slightly improved by the use of the new IT infrastructure we were able to equip the school with a year ago).
Whilst the school is on the waiting list to receive such items from the Ministry of Education, with the country’s finances being so poor, made worse due to the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the enormous increase in power costs (Moldova received all of its gas and electricity from Russia), the school does not believe that any equipment is likely to be received for many years, if at all.
And so, in preparation for the new school year, the school has drawn up a short-list of chemistry, biology and physics equipment and through your and our financial and emotional support, will source these from an approved Moldovan based company.
As well as the science equipment, ChildAid are planning to fund the installation of various playground equipment which will offer exercise and hours of fun.
All of this is made possible through your kind support - the more support we receive the more equipment we are able to purchase for the children of this very poor, but very welcoming area in one of Europe's poorest country.
