The education crisis in Haiti reveals that 80% of teachers don't have pre-service training, 25% of teachers haven't graduated from high school, and 60% of students drop out before 6th grade. This project will equip our team to train teachers on student-centered pedagogy, ensuring that the students' immeasurable potential is unlocked through receiving quality education. With the amount requested, we'll be able to complete Year 1 Training for 400 teachers, impacting approximately 14,000 students.
There are over 18,000 schools in Haiti, but an education crisis still remains. 80% of Haitian teachers don't have pre-service training (USAID, 2017), 25% of Haitian teachers have never attended secondary school (Borgen Project, 2019), and 60% of Haitian students drop out before completing the 6th grade (CRS, 2012). Absolute poverty could be reduced by 30% from learning improvements (Education Commission). Learning improvements are directly linked to the quality of education a teacher provides.
Traditional methods of teacher training only provide training once every year with no feedback system. This method of training fails isolate the effects of a program and understanding program impact. The P4H method of teacher training involves an iterative cycle of Training (72 hours of Intensive Pedagogical Focus), PLCs (Professional Learning Communities), and Observation & Evaluation (SWOT Analysis, Feedback Session, Qualitative/Quantitative Assessments) lasting for 3 years.
In this project, we'll be able to complete Year 1 Training for 400 teachers, providing quality education for 14K students. Education quality, rather than quantity, most accurately predicts economic growth (Hanushek, 2008). In 2050, GDP per capita in low-income areas would be 70% lower than it would be if all children were learning. For each $1 invested in an additional year of schooling, earnings increase by $5 in low-income countries and $2.50 in lower-middle income countries (UNESCO, 2016).
