This Easter, please give a Chicken not an Egg! Give a chicken to a Grandmother in Darfur and she will be healthy. Whilst our Goat Loans work miracles for children, herding a flock is too much for frail older people to manage, and so Kids for Kids provides chickens - easy to look after and the eggs are a brilliant source of protein. Reports are coming through loud and clear - Chickens transform lives. Grandma Afaf said: "For the first time in months I am eating good food"
In Darfur, life is hard, especially for frail grandparents with no income. They survive on very basic millet porridge, malnourished and weak. With inflation soaring, they cannot buy other food to stay healthy. Older women in particular are very vulnerable. A family needs many members to be viable, but since the conflict erupted 12 years ago more and more elderly people are left with no adult helpers. Many care single-handedly for their grandchildren. It is a desperate situation.
Kids for Kids provides Goat Loans to families in Darfur, but this is too much for an older person to manage, so we provide chickens - easy to look after and their eggs are very nutritious. We have tested this micro-finance initiative with a Pilot Project in three villages, and the feedback is very clear - Chickens transform lives! Grandma Afaf told us: " My chickens are a source of comfort. They have given me energy and hope for the future. And I love my 7 little chicks which have just hatched"
The potential long term impact your gift will have is amazing. Short term, you will be saving people's lives. Longer term - with the grandmothers feeling stronger and healthier - they will be able to actively contribute to their communities, passing on their skills, wisdom and knowledge down the generations. The entire community can benefit from these newly empowered women.
