“When I saw the struggle elderly people in Darfur have just to survive I knew I had to do something, however little, to make their lives better” said Patricia Parker MBE Founder of Kids for Kids. “With your help we have provided chickens to frail elderly people in six of our villages. It may not sound much, but in Darfur, to have a source of protein right on your doorstep is a life saver”.
Thank you to all of you who supported this important project, providing chickens to grandparents in Darfur. This has been a real and tangible success in helping those who are too frail and elderly to be able to benefit from a Goat Loan from Kids for Kids. Goats are taken some way away from the village so that they do not damage crops, but long walks are an impossibility for many older people. Life is really hard in Darfur. There are no roads and no transport. There is no one to help if you cannot help yourself. To have a small flock of chickens has a dramatic effect on the health of older people. Grandparents often look after orphaned grandchildren, so having nutritious eggs for essential protein helps children too. They are literally a life-saver for the whole family.
Your support could not be more needed right now. 2016 really is the year when I am going to have to find every means possible to raise as much money as I can. The last two years have seen the exodus of virtually every aid agency from the region. Meanwhile violence continues to affect families in remote villages and the harvest is known to be only 30% of what was hoped for in many regions – places where children were already malnourished. You can see Kids for Kids has a lot to do.
We are closing down the 2015 Chickens Project here on Global Giving but please look out for the next one, which will launch as soon as we have identified the next villages to work with. The families of Darfur need you more than ever this year. Wishing you a happy and peaceful 2016, and thank you for your support.
Patricia
