Empowering Communities to Coexist with Elephants

Dear Supporters,

Thank you for standing with us as we work to create a future where both people and elephants can coexist. Your generous support is helping us drive meaningful change in communities where competition for resources is a daily challenge.

This quarter, thanks to your donations, we’ve been able to ramp up our community empowerment efforts as the rainy season approaches—a critical time for rural farmers. We’ve been working directly with farmers to prepare their fields and protect their crops using non-lethal methods proven to deter elephants.

One of the key tools we’ve been supporting is the use of chili burning—a technique that safely repels elephants using the pungent smoke from chili peppers. With your help, we’ve provided essential supplies, including chili and locally crafted tin burners known as “mbolas” in Setswana. These burners are an effective and sustainable solution to reduce conflict and protect livelihoods without harming elephants.

Of course, with any method, success depends on understanding and proper implementation. That’s why we’ve also been delivering personal protective equipment and the vital education and training on the safe and effective use of mbolas in the field. This knowledge sharing is the heart of our work—it empowers farmers, fosters coexistence, and strengthens the bond between conservation and community.

Thank you for supporting these efforts as the farming season begins. Your contributions are helping to build resilient communities and protect both people and elephants for generations to come.

With gratitude,

The Elephants for Africa Team
