Emergency aid after floods in CAMELEON center

Dear Donors,

Almost one year ago, in January, 2021, CAMELEON Negros center was heavily flooded, and you were here to support us. We are pleased to inform you of the last steps of the works done to rebuild the fence of CAMELEON center.

CAMELEON was part of the Bamboo Seedling Segregation in support of the Provincial Integrated Water Security Program of Malogo River Water Shed. We availed 500 giant bamboo seedlings from the province through our partner Zonta Club. These giant bamboos will be planted along the river bank after the completion of the flood control structure construction.

Up to date, the overall accomplished work is more than 25% (because of the pandemic and delay due to the weather). Setting-up of workers’ barracks, excavation and mobilization of materials were completed while the construction of the foundation walls is still on-going. Around 25 workers are assigned to this project.

The next steps: the fence will be built and our team will plant the giant bamboos. It would not have been possible without your precious help to ensure the safety of our 30 girls survivors of sexual abuse, living in this center.

Last January, heavy monsoon rains and flooding affected our CAMELEON Negros center, threatening the safety of the 26 young girls (aged 5 to 17) and 8 staff who are staying there. Thanks to the generosity of our local donors, a temporary fence was built in April by a team of Filipino workers and volunteers.

This August, we will start the construction of the slope protection around center. Last week, we mobilized the labor force, materials needed, and equipment. The first stage will be the construction of a temporary bunk house, outside the perimeter fence of CAMELEON, to ensure both the protection of our beneficiaries and the comfort of the construction workers. The works will soon begin to reinforce the slope, especially because it's already the rainy season. The construction will last approximately 90 days.

Then, we plan to rebuild a concrete wall and plant giant bamboos along the slope in order to avoid further erosion and catastrophes. It’s a long-term work but necessary to gain resilience in a country that has more than 20 typhoons a year.

Meanwhile, our beneficiaries can now play outside without risk and they continue their healing process after the traumas their suffered. CAMELEON’s Negros center welcomed 3 new girls last July and this was possible after the repairs that were made inside our buildings after the flood. We aim to welcome and rehabilitate 30 young girl survivors of sexual abuse by the end of August.
