Severe floods and extreme weather events have devastated vulnerable communities across South India, leaving thousands of families without shelter, food, and livelihoods. VOICE Trust is responding with immediate relief and long-term recovery support, focusing on rural farmers, women, and children. This project aims to provide life-saving aid while rebuilding resilient communities capable of withstanding future climate shocks.

The Challenge

Recurring floods and cyclones in Tamil Nadu and neighboring regions have intensified due to climate change. Rural and coastal communities—already economically fragile—face repeated losses of homes, crops, and income.

Families are struggling with:

  • Food insecurity and unsafe drinking water
  • Lack of shelter and basic sanitation
  • Increased risk of disease outbreaks
  • Loss of livelihoods and income sources

Without timely intervention, these communities risk falling deeper into poverty and vulnerability.

Our Solution

VOICE Trust will implement a three-phase intervention:

1. Immediate Relief (0–30 Days)

  • Distribute emergency food kits and clean drinking water
  • Provide tarpaulins and temporary shelter materials
  • Conduct mobile medical camps

2. Early Recovery (1–3 Months)

  • Restore livelihoods through seeds, tools, and livestock support
  • Repair damaged homes and sanitation facilities

3. Long-Term Resilience (3–12 Months)

  • Train communities in disaster preparedness
  • Promote climate-resilient agriculture practices
  • Establish village disaster response committees

Impact

This project will directly support:

  • 5,000+ families affected by disasters
  • Improved access to food, water, and healthcare
  • Restored livelihoods for farmers and daily wage workers
  • Stronger community preparedness for future disasters

Stories of Hope (Optional for GlobalGiving page)

"When the floods came, we lost everything—our home, crops, and savings. With timely support, we received food, shelter, and seeds to start again. Today, we are rebuilding our lives with hope."
— A beneficiary farmer from rural Tamil Nadu

Field Update: Supporting Coastal Livelihoods in Madavamedu During a recent field visit, the VOICE Trust team traveled to Madavamedu, a coastal village that was rehabilitated with 190 permanent houses following the devastating 2004 tsunami. While the community has rebuilt their homes over the years, their livelihoods—especially fishing—continue to face daily challenges. Fishing remains the primary source of income for most families in Madavamedu. However, fishers currently repair their nets under direct sunlight, often sitting for long hours in harsh heat and unpredictable weather conditions. This not only affects their health but also reduces productivity and damages the nets. Women, who play a key role in net mending and fish processing, are particularly impacted. Without proper shaded workspaces, they struggle to carry out their work efficiently and safely.

Identified Need The community has strongly expressed the need for dedicated shaded areas (Net Repair Sheds) where fishers can: Repair and maintain fishing nets Protect materials from sun and rain damage Work in a safer, more organized environment Proposed Intervention VOICE Trust plans to construct community-based shaded net repair units that are: Durable and weather-resistant Accessible to multiple fishing families Designed with community participation Expected Impact Improved working conditions for 200+ fishing families Increased lifespan of fishing nets Enhanced income stability for coastal households Safe and inclusive spaces for women fish workers

A Voice from the Community "We have strong houses today, but our work still happens under the open sky. A small shaded space will make a big difference in our daily lives." — Fisherwoman, Madavamedu

Call for Support: A simple shaded structure can significantly improve the livelihoods of coastal families. Your support can help us create dignified working spaces for fishers who depend on the sea for survival. Help us build safe and sustainable net repair spaces for Madavamedu.
