Reviving Paradise: Our Holistic Approach to Coral Conservation

By Lily Haines | Communications Director, PIMS

Maintaining an underwater coral nursery
Maintaining an underwater coral nursery

In the heart of the Caribbean's turquoise waters, the Perry Institute for Marine Science (PIMS) has been steadfast in its commitment to the protection and restoration of our precious marine ecosystems. Thanks to your unwavering support, we've made significant strides in both coral and mangrove restoration this last quarter—a testament to the power of our collective action.

Revitalizing Coral Reefs: The Lifeline of the Ocean

At the forefront of our coral restoration efforts is the Reef Rescue Network (RRN), an alliance of dive shops, non-profits, and forward-thinking businesses invested in preserving the Caribbean's coral reefs. This expansive network, made possible by your contributions, has taken a quantum leap forward with the launch of our "Coral is Calling" campaign in 2023, which has seen over 10,000 nursery-reared corals planted onto degraded reefs throughout the Caribbean. With over 50 partner locations spanning St. Lucia, Aruba and The Bahamas, our efforts are not just about beautifying the underwater landscape; they're about rebuilding the intricate coral structures that provide shelter, food, and breeding grounds for countless marine species. Moreover, these thriving coral ecosystems play a crucial role in supporting local communities, safeguarding coastlines, and underpinning economies, thereby highlighting the profound interconnection between healthy coral reefs and human well-being.

Denise's Journey: A New Leaf in Mangrove Restoration

We are thrilled to welcome Denise Mizell to our team as the Abaco Program Manager, marking a pivotal moment in our mangrove restoration efforts. Denise, a passionate environmentalist with a deep connection to the Bahamian landscapes, has been instrumental in spearheading our initiatives on Abaco Island, particularly in the wake of Hurricane Dorian's devastating 185 mph winds and 20 ft storm surges in 2019. Under Denise's leadership and with support from our partners at The Bahamas Mangrove Alliance, we've planted over 28,000 mangrove propagules in areas ravaged by the hurricane, breathing new life into these vital ecosystems. Mangroves are more than just coastal guardians against storm surges; they are nurseries for marine life, carbon sinks, and biodiversity hotspots. Denise's story is one of resilience and hope—a testament to the impact your support has on real lives and the environment.

Sustainable Fisheries: A Sea of Change

In tandem with our efforts in coral and mangrove restoration, our fisheries research has been pivotal in understanding and protecting key marine species that are vital to both the ecosystem and the local communities. Species such as the Nassau grouper, queen conch, and spiny lobster are at the heart of our studies, with each project aimed at unraveling the mysteries of their habitats, behaviors, and population dynamics. One innovative highlight from our fisheries work is the development of the "stick-it" claw removal technique for stone crabs, significantly improving their survival rates post-harvest and setting a new standard for sustainable fishing practices in The Bahamas. Furthermore, we’re in the midst of launching our “Bahamas Best Catch” Sustainable Seafood Campaign, marking a significant stride towards promoting responsible seafood consumption. By engaging with local fishers, restaurants, and consumers, we're not only advocating for the health of our marine species but also ensuring the longevity of our fishing traditions and livelihoods. This holistic approach to marine conservation, encompassing reef, mangrove, and fisheries management, is what your support makes possible, creating a ripple effect that extends far beyond the immediate projects to foster a sustainable relationship between humans and the ocean.

Community Empowerment: Cultivating Stewards of the Sea

Within the heart of our initiatives lies a deep commitment to community engagement and empowerment. This past year, our projects have transcended environmental restoration, fostering a vibrant collaboration between PIMS and the local Caribbean communities. Through a series of educational workshops, hands-on restoration activities, and citizen science programs, we've ignited a shared passion for marine conservation among community members. By equipping local residents with knowledge and skills, we've seen a remarkable transformation: fishermen becoming coral gardeners, students turning into young marine advocates, and local businesses advocating for sustainable practices. These community-driven efforts not only amplify the impact of our conservation work but also sow the seeds for a lasting legacy of environmental stewardship within the heart of the Caribbean.

Looking Ahead: A Future Flourishing with Life

As we move forward, our vision is clear—to see a Caribbean where vibrant coral reefs thrive alongside lush mangrove forests, where local communities are empowered stewards of their natural heritage, and where every contribution, big or small, makes a difference. Your continued support – be it through one-time donations or monthly recurring donations – is crucial for turning this vision into reality. Thank you for being an integral part of this mission.
