Summary

The province of Nakhon Ratchasima is located in northeast Thailand's Isaan region. Children, young adults and young families often migrate to larger cities seeking labor opportunities. Many of these migrants are impoverished and illiterate increasing their vulnerability of being trafficked or exploited. Educational, nutritional and wellness support in an encouraging atmosphere provide young adults, teens and children with the opportunity to overcome poverty and illiteracy in their community.

Challenge

Many children residing in substandard housing communities of Korat do not attend school. Specific to rural communities, one in four school-aged children do not attend school. Many parents are illiterate and unable to assist with school assignments resulting in generational illiteracy and poverty.

Solution

Establishing a family resource center which provides transportation to the facility, after school programs and day camp programs with homework assistance, tutoring, English language skills, problem solving games and fun will effectively improve the students attendance in school. Homework assistance will provide an atmosphere with focus on comprehension resulting in improved test scores and better educational opportunities. Education eradicates vulnerabilities of children at-risk of trafficking.

Long-Term Impact

Educational support combined with nutritional and wellness support provide impoverished and illiterate families with the opportunity to break free of generational poverty. The provision of an encouraging atmosphere for homework assistance and tutoring increases the desire to learn. Children and young mothers (obtaining GEDs) gain confidence and hope of breaking through the chains of poverty and illiteracy. The next generation will impact their community as educated and self-sufficient leaders.
