GABA HOPE FOR KIDS
Empowering Vulnerable Children and Mothers in Wakiso District, Uganda
IMPACT REPORT
Theme: The Crisis of Malnutrition and Parasitic Infection
1. INTRODUCTION
GABA HOPE FOR KIDS is located in Kisigula Village, Wakiso District. Our mission is to ensure vulnerable children stay in school and to empower their mothers and guardians with sustainable livelihoods.
Today we share a hidden crisis affecting the children we serve, malnutrition and parasitic infection. These silent challenges steal learning time, health and hope from vulnerable children.
2. THE CRISIS WE ARE SEEING
A. Malnutrition Crisis
- Many children come to school without breakfast and go to bed without a balanced meal.
- Families depend on small gardens with low yields and cannot afford diverse foods.
- Children show signs of stunting, weakness, poor concentration in class and frequent illness.
- Malnutrition affects brain development and school performance.
B. Parasitic Infection Crisis
- Children suffer from intestinal worms and other parasitic infections due to unsafe water, poor sanitation and walking barefoot.
- Infection causes stomach pain, anemia, fatigue and malnutrition as worms take nutrients.
- Children miss school due to sickness and lose valuable learning time.
- Girls and young children are most affected and most at risk.
C. The Double Burden
Malnutrition and parasitic infection work together. Malnourished children are more vulnerable to infection, and infected children become more malnourished. This cycle keeps children out of school and traps families in poverty.
3. HOW WE ARE RESPONDING
- Training mothers in climate smart farming, kitchen gardens and nutrition education to improve food diversity at home.
- Providing seeds for vegetables, fruits and nutritious crops for family resilience.
- Conducting health education on safe water, hand washing, hygiene and wearing shoes to prevent infection.
- Working with local health workers to encourage deworming and health check-ups.
- Providing scholastic support and follow up to keep children learning with dignity and strength.
- Sharing knowledge on preparing balanced meals using locally available foods.
4. IMPACT STORY - MEET FAITH
Faith is a young girl in primary school who lives with her grandmother. She was often weak in class and missed school due to stomach pain and lack of food.
Through our support, her grandmother received training in vegetable gardening and nutrition, plus health education on hygiene and safe water. Faith now eats more diverse foods at home and has received deworming support through our health linkage.
Faith says: Now I have strength to stay in class all day. I want to become a teacher.
Her story shows how fighting malnutrition and infection restores learning time and hope.
5. CHALLENGES
- Rising cost of nutritious seeds and food inputs.
- Limited access to clean water and sanitation facilities.
- Need for more health education materials and training space.
- Many more families need urgent nutrition and health support than we can currently reach.
6. PLAN FOR NEXT
- Expand kitchen garden training to more mothers and schools.
- Scale up nutrition education using local foods.
- Strengthen hygiene education and link more children to deworming and health services.
- Provide more scholastic and hygiene kits to keep children healthy and in school.
7. APPRECIATION
We sincerely thank all our donors on GlobalGiving, friends, volunteers and local leaders in Kisigula who stand with us to fight this silent crisis. Your support is restoring health, protecting learning time and keeping hope alive.
8. CONCLUSION
When a child is free from hunger and infection, they can learn, grow and dream. The crisis of malnutrition and parasitic infection is real but together we can break the cycle with knowledge, food and care.
